Senior Manager, Data Science and Machine Learning
Toast is seeking a Senior Manager for Data Science and Machine Learning to lead AI initiatives and collaborate across teams. The role requires an advanced degree and experience in deploying machine learning solutions.

As a Senior Engineering Manager for ML & AI, you will partner across the R&D organization, representing the team as a thought leader in data science and machine learning. You will set directions for the Data & AI team to deliver innovative machine learning solutions using extensive restaurant, payments, and orders data. Collaborating with data scientists, machine learning engineers, product managers, and fellow engineering managers, you will turn ML/AI solutions into business impact across product lines, including commerce and hardware.
Responsibilities
- Lead, influence, and contribute across R&D to drive business value for Toast and our restaurant customers.
- Collaborate closely with product and engineering stakeholders to drive strategic direction for Toast’s AI-enabled products.
- Work with leaders from Data Science, ML Engineering, and Platform teams to shape and execute the vision of the ML Platform at Toast.
- Break down larger ML initiatives into smaller problems to enable data science to deliver incremental business value and lead the team to execute on them.
- Coach and mentor data scientists and ML engineers to support their career growth.
- Incorporate up-to-date data science approaches as best practices for the team.
- Help build out and expand Toast’s AI product portfolio.
- Work effectively in a dynamic environment while focusing on key goals and objectives.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent disciplines with 5+ years of experience leading Data Science & ML Engineering teams.
- Prior success deploying machine learning solutions in large-scale production environments.
- Strong knowledge of the mathematical foundations of statistics and machine learning.
- Demonstrated excellence in a relevant AI/ML discipline (CV, NLP, etc.), including experience with ML model building using libraries such as Scikit, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
- Knowledge of machine learning fundamentals, including algorithm families (regression, classification, unsupervised), A/B testing, hypothesis testing, and optimization.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and product stakeholders to evaluate new machine learning opportunities.
- Strong communication skills, demonstrated through documentation and presentations, with the ability to present findings to senior management.
- Experience in mentoring and growing a data science team.
