Summary

This study explores how writing professionals perceive their relationships with generative AI, highlighting the balance between rivalry and collaboration in shaping work practices and outcomes.

Why It Matters

Understanding the dynamics between rivalry and collaboration in the context of generative AI is crucial for writing professionals. This research provides insights into how these perceptions influence productivity, satisfaction, and skill maintenance, which can inform best practices in the industry.

Key Takeaways

  • Rivalry among writing professionals is linked to skill maintenance and relational crafting.
  • Collaboration enhances productivity and satisfaction but may lead to long-term skill deterioration.
  • A balanced approach combining rivalry and collaboration can optimize work outcomes.
  • High levels of both rivalry and collaboration are essential for long-term success.
  • Design implications suggest ways to manage the relationship with generative AI effectively.

Through a cross-sectional survey with writing professionals (n=403) in diverse roles, we show that collaboration and rivalry orientation are associated with differences in work practices and outcomes. Rivalry is primarily associated with relational crafting and skill maintenance. Collaboration is primarily associated with task crafting, productivity, and satisfaction, at the cost of long-term skill deterioration. Combination of the orientations (high rivalry and high collaboration) reconciles these differences, while boosting the association with the outcomes. Our findings argue for a balanced approach where high levels of rivalry and collaboration are essential to shape work practices and generate outcomes aimed at...
