My Say: Inflection point: From rapid adoption of AI to responsible governance

As machine learning systems become embedded across industries, from financial services and manufacturing to healthcare and logistics, countries are increasingly competing not only in technological capability but also in the governance frameworks that shape the responsible deployment of these technologies. Malaysia’s AI ecosystem is expanding rapidly. According to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, more than 140 AI solution providers have already been onboarded into the Malaysia Digital ecosystem. National initiatives are also targeting the creation of up to 900 AI start-ups, supported by programmes such as the AI Sandbox initiative developed in collaboration with Nvidia. Infrastructure investment has further strengthened the country’s digital positioning. Global technology firms including Google, Microsoft and Nvidia have announced regional investments in cloud computing and hyperscale data centres across Southeast Asia. Malaysia’s high internet penetration, now exceeding 97% of households according to the World Bank’s digital economy assessments, combined with competitive energy and land costs has made the country an increasingly attractive destination for data infrastructure.
